Emi Weir Founder Ma Te Sai, Laos

Australian-born, Emi Weir, moved to Luang Prabang in 2009. A travel professional, she came looking for somewhere to use her sales and marketing skills and create a life around the tourism experience. In 2010, the idea for Ma Té Sai, a fair trade store, was born. With the help of Clem, a French women working in development in Vientiane, they sourced artisanal products from all around Laos. The aim was to push the tourist dollar further to those in need, helping women in agricultural areas to support families with extra income. In 2013 she raised funds to train women in two Taileu cotton weaving villages north of Luang Prabang to sew. Ma Té Sai grew into a social enterprise, developing markets to increase income for rural women, and training women in sewing and business skills. In 2018 Ma Té Sai incorporated in Singapore, expanding their retail network beyond Laos. Ma Té Sai is a member of RAISE and one of the original “khakis” or sustainable brands of The Green Collective.
