Creating a collaboration between Fashion Revolution Singapore and the Fashion Marketing Department of Raffles College of Higher Education Singapore was a dream come true. I managed a team of amazing students who created the posters, organized the fashion show and created interactive content for Fashion Revolution Singapore’s official Fashion Revolution Week event in 2019. Students assisted in conceptualizing the alternative fashion show, designing and executing hair and makeup, working as runners, dressers, carrying out photography and organizing volunteers.
In addition to designing the official posters and content for Instagram and Facebook they were tasked with creating content for the event. The brief was to create displays that visitors could engage with throughout the day drawing attention to the issue of sustainability in the fashion industry.
Via research and ideation process students created an original game of Fashion Sustainability Snap and Snakes & Ladders. Both games creatively explained fashion’s impact on the planet including child labour in SE Asia, low wages and garment waste. Discovering SE Asia is a key centre for child labour issues led them to create childhood games to highlight the plight of children in the region. Students also created an art installation to tangibly demonstrate the amount of water used in the fashion industry and the impact of fashion waste on the planet.
Fashion E-commerce Panel Discussion, In collaboration with Wework Beach Road
Students elected to organize a talk on the topic of Fashion E-commerce. In order give students exposure to startup culture I facilitated the event by organizing a collaboration with WeWork Beach Road on the 08 June 2018.
Panelists invited to share their knowledge included:
Emanuelle Coulon - Value Consultant , HOOTSUITE
Jasper Goh - Founder & Owner, THE AUTHORITY
Joanne Quak - Brand Manager, DRESSEBELLE
Sarah Tan - Partner Manager, SHOPIFY
Guided by me, students conceptualized the entire event by creating the itinerary, inviting guests, procuring F&B, designing event collaterals including logo, poster and E-ticket. They successfully managed the event on the day and procured personalized gifts to thank speakers. One student even got to realize her dream to become an MC.
Fashion Shows
In the last 6 months of their Advanced Diploma in Fashion Marketing & Management, students have to conceptualize a fashion show. Students are responsible for coming up with a concept idea for the show, selecting collections from Fashion Design students, sourcing models, designing the set, inviting guests, managing the budget, and developing a promotional campaign. All for a 10 minutes show.
During the pandemic, fashion shows had to be different because Singapore had strict COVID restrictions for events. I guided the students to develop digital concepts that made sense for the group of Fashion Design students’ collections. They had to research the best online platform that would get maximum visibility and learn how to pivot from organizing a fashion show to creating a pre-recorded video.
If you’d like to be fancy then we all learned what it takes to make a #fashion film. It was exciting and challenging at the same time and students could not have achieved the final result without the help of Blackbird Productions in Singapore - a boutique video production agency serving clients like Coca Cola, L’Oreal, and Sunglasses Hut.
Get in touch if you’d like to create a video but you think you don’t have the budget. You’d be surprised what creative thinking can achieve.
Odyssey Live-streamed Show
Odyssey was a hybrid ‘phygital’ event with an in-person Fashion Show restricted to only 50 guests whilst being live-streamed via Youtube.
We partnered with Visual Communication students who helped to organize the technicalities for the live stream. Lighting was kindly provided by a local lighting specialist who’s clients include F1 and the Esplanade.
We Can Be Heroes Fashion Show
As part of their degree course, students elected to create a fashion show. I facilitated the event execution - which covered everything from developing the creative concept to creating marketing collaterals, sourcing models, venue, music, makeup, entertainment and F&B.
Their goal was to sell show tickets and cover their costs and execute the event successfully whilst showcasing the collection of Fashion Design Students from Raffles College of Higher Education Singapore.
Guiding a passionate group of student to create a fashion show with meaning has been one of the highlights of teaching this module.
The students created a concept honoring the late David Bowie, inspired by his music. The event poster and branding creatively utilized his Ziggy Stardust alter ego.
The show finale had an important message allowing the audience to participate in the show and interact with the models. Creating an unforgettable experience for the audience which is what fashion shows are all about.
The show took place on 15 November 2017, one of the first in Singapore to my knowledge to create a fashion show with signs - as a creative protest for us to be kind to one another.
